I was born and raised in the Bluegrass State and went to the University of Kentucky where I earned two bachelor's degrees - one in accounting and one in finance. Like a lot of kids with that pedigree, I started off at a public accounting firm but soon moved to the corporate world.
Over the next ten years or so I focused on corporate tax, more specifically international tax. I worked for great companies in Kentucky and beyond, including three amazing years in Ireland. A few years ago, I decided to expand my skillset. I did a rotation in internal audit for a few years, traveling the world and getting to know how businesses really work and how accounting, tax, and legal rules impact that. When the traveling got to be too much, I took a position helping my international finance colleagues correctly interpret and apply accounting rules. Eventually, I made my way back over to tax.
If you want to know more about my professional background, my LinkedIn profile is here.
In early 2017, I said goodbye to that life for many reasons. I had a great career, but wasn't inspired by what I was doing. The political landscape was such that I longed to be publicly active in a way my employers might not appreciate. Heck, I just wanted to do some non-corporate things like color my hair purple and pierce my nose. I couldn't be my authentic self in day-to-day life and that was no longer acceptable to me.
So this is JDawn Consulting. Yes, it's quite a pay cut. But every day I get to talk to interesting people. Better still, I get to help those people out of common (and uncommon) tax, accounting, and other financial problems.
- Individual taxpayers scared because they're 2, 3, 10 years behind in their filings.
- Freelancers who have no idea what they should be doing, but know they're not doing it.
- Small business owners who need more attention than they're getting from larger firms.
They all want the same thing. Someone who will hear their "sins" and calmly make a plan. Someone who is extremely qualified but won't judge them for their lack of knowledge. Someone who is truly interested in what they're trying to do and wants to coach and partner with them to make it happen.
That's me. If it sounds good to you - whether you're right here in Smoketown or on the other side of the world - please reach out. Let's get to work.
